What this topic covers
A “cold” and “the flu” are different viruses, and treating them well means knowing what you’re dealing with. Colds typically come on gradually and stay in your head and chest. Flu hits fast with fever, body aches, and exhaustion. COVID can look like either. Bacterial infections (strep, sinus, pneumonia) need a prescriber’s eyes.
How we can help
- Minor Ailment Assessments — for several cold and flu-adjacent conditions, an Ontario pharmacist can assess you and prescribe right at the counter. That includes uncomplicated UTIs, herpes cold sores, allergic rhinitis, and pink eye. No appointment, no doctor visit required, OHIP-covered. See our Minor Ailments service for the full list.
- Symptomatic OTC guidance — decongestants, cough suppressants, expectorants, throat lozenges, fever reducers. The aisle is overwhelming. We’ll cut through it based on what symptoms you actually have, what’s safe with your other meds, and what’s a placebo.
- Antiviral conversation — if you’ve been hit by influenza in the first 48 hours, antivirals like Tamiflu can shorten the course. We can check eligibility, fill the prescription, and counsel on use.
- Flu shots — for anyone 2 and up. Walk-in during flu season, no appointment needed (but booking saves time). See our Vaccinations service.
- COVID tests, treatments, vaccines — we carry rapid antigen tests, can advise on Paxlovid eligibility, and administer current COVID boosters.
When to come see us — and when to call your doctor
Come see us if: you have a routine cold/flu and want guidance, you think it might be something a pharmacist can assess (UTI, pink eye, etc.), or you want a flu shot.
Call your doctor or visit urgent care if: symptoms last more than 10 days, fever stays above 39 °C for more than 3 days, you have shortness of breath, chest pain, dehydration, or you’re in a high-risk group (very young, very old, immunocompromised, pregnant).
